How to Choose Stencil Material

MYLAR VS. VINYL STENCILS

This will help you determine whether a Mylar or Vinyl stencil is most suitable for your project.

 

MYLAR

VINYL

The material:

A semi-transparent, durable Mylar 
polyester plastic.

 

A thin white vinyl film with a low-tack 
adhesive on a blue backing.

 

 

Most common usage:

Primarily used to repeat a message or design several times. Or stencil the same message at different times.

One-time usage for stenciling custom lettering.

Advantages:

  • Re-usable and washable

  • Relatively easy to work with

  • Won't easily tear or stretch

 

  • Good for stenciling long messages with "bridgeless" letters

  • Low-tack adhesive backing which allows it to stick to most surfaces and minimize the risk of paint leaking in under the stencils

  • Available on long sheets up to 10 feet.
